EXTENSION • NOTTINGHAM
An extension and ground floor reconfiguration transformed this period family home, creating a generous open-plan space at the heart of the house. The new layout brings the family together for everyday living while a smaller snug offers a quiet retreat for music and relaxation.

THINKING AHEAD
A key element of the solution for this re-design was to create a snug. This was created between the family living room and new open plan space. This room is flexible, and can be used as a study, for music, TV and gaming, or even as a guest bedroom.
Having spaces which can adapt as family needs change is crucial to ensure the longevity of a layout design. A large internal high window, and a new side window pushed much needed light into this space.

ROOM LAYOUT
Setting out the kitchen layout and where the furniture will go at an early stage, helps all elements of the build run smoothly.
Details such as lighting and socket positions all flow from the furniture placement. It’s important to get the layout settled before the build begins.

BEFORE
A poor kitchen design meant this room didn’t work for socialising and accessing the garden.
The family decided to extend above the kitchen dining area, and knock through downstairs to create a larger space.

AFTER
The immediate link to the garden of the newly designed kitchen space creates a real sociable hub.
The room also benefits from all the natural light flooding through the large sliding doors.

COLOUR
Strong colours can work well to bring cohesion to large spaces, as shown in this project, being used to link the kitchen and seating area. F&B Hague Blue 30 was used for this home.
Where natural light is plentiful dark walls are a great way to add interest and character, without taking light from the space. It also provides a great camouflage for the television!
